Festivals of India |
|||||
India celebrates many
festivals. These are as varied in origin as they are large in number.
There are innumerable national, regional, local, religious, seasonal and
social festivities. These festive occasions lend the Indian culture
amazing popular appeal and make the Indian tradition rich and colorful.
Festivals here are characterized by color, gaiety, enthusiasm, feasts and a variety of prayers and rituals. Travelers to Indian are struck by the scale and multiplicity of the festivities that populate the cultural scene there. In this section, I have included some of the major festivals. This is by no means a finite list. It just gives an idea of the variety and richness of Indian festivals. I hope it will provide an understanding of the origin of the festival, how it is celebrated and stories involved. It is meant to be starting place for understanding of our rich tradition for our children who have not witnessed this first hand. The links section provides more resources available on the web which can promote further interest. I have also included a number of links that are to do with the commercial aspect of the festivals. |
